EU Waste Framework Directive

EU Waste Framework Directive

On 9 September, the European Parliament formally adopted the revision of the Waste Framework Directive, introducing binding food waste reduction targets and mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes for textiles.

Municipal Equipment – Cities will see increased demand for food and textile waste collection, creating opportunities for refuse collection vehicles and sweepers tailored to these streams.

Cleaning Sector – Professional cleaning companies and their clients (hospitality, healthcare, food services) will face stricter rules on textile disposal (cloths, uniforms, linen) and stronger compliance obligations on food waste management.

Vehicle Wash Systems – Operators will be indirectly impacted through stricter textile recycling requirements (uniforms, cleaning cloths), with higher pressure on local recycling solutions as illegal textile exports are curbed.

Next steps: The Directive will be signed and published in the EU Official Journal, enter into force 20 days later, and must be transposed into national law by March/April 2027.

At EUnited – E uropean Engineering Industries Association, we represent manufacturers in municipal equipment, cleaning machines, and vehicle wash systems. We will continue monitoring EU waste policy to ensure our sectors are ready for the transition to a more circular economy.
