World Robotics 2014 - Latest Global Robot Statistics and Forecasts Published on September 30, 2014

The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) released the latest editions of the two separate studies of World Robotics (Industrial Robots and Service Robots) on September 30, 2014.  According to the IFR, more than 200,000 industrial robots will be installed worldwide in 2014, which is 15% above 2013.  Between 2015 and 2017, growth will likely continue at about 12% on average per year. Asia is expected to lead with a growth of about 21% in 2014, particularly China and Taiwan, Korea and most of the other Southeast Asian markets .

In particular, Europe had 43,284 units of robots installed in 2013 (5% above 2012) with a total accumulated stock of 392,227 units. In 2014, the number of installations in Europe is expected to rise to almost 46,000 units (an increase of 6%).  Among the European countries, the German market is particulary expected to have further growth in 2014. Between 2015 and 2017, robot sales are estimated to increase by about 6% in the Americas as well as in Europe, and about 16% in Asia/Australia (on average per year).

Main drivers of the growth will continue to be the automotive industry, as well as the electronics industry.

Service Robots
On the service robotics front, the IFR reports: about 21,000 service robots for professional use were sold worldwide in 2013, 4% more than in 2012.  The total sales value slightly decreased to USD 3.6 billion. For the period 2014-2017, worldwide sales are expected to increase to about 134,500 units with an estimated value of USD 18.9 billion.

In particular, personal and domestic robots as well as logistic systems will continue to see a strong growth.

About four million service robots for personal and domestic use were sold in 2013, 28% more than in 2012. It is estimated that about 31 million units of service robots for personal use will be sold between 2014 and 2017, thus indicating the continued strong growth of service robotics in this field.

About 1,900 logistic systems were installed in 2013, 37% more than in 2012, accounting for 9% of the total sales of professional service robots. Thereof, about 1,300 automated guided vehicles in manufacturing environments buildup an increase of almost 70% compared to automated guided vehicles sales numbers in 2012.

World Robotics is the most valuable source of information and the international benchmark for global robotics statistics covering all relevant market related activities of industrial and service robots.
